Abstract

Based on the need of regional differentiation concerning the so-called “Crisis of the Third Century” in the Roman Empire, the question of crisis is posed for the region of Bithynia. This is done on the example of the city of Nicaea and the Gothic invasion of 258/9, taking its effects into aim. These are explained by including comparable sources from Pontus and Paphlagonia as well as armies passing through Bithynia and coinage. It is shown that Bithynia was not close to break-down in the third quarter of the 3rd century but nevertheless found itself in a situation of crisis.
